FDI General Assembly selects Drs. Chadwick, Gehani, Marron-Tarrazzi for management positions

Geneva – The FDI World Dental Federation General Assembly elected Gregory Chadwick, DDS, past ADA President, as FDI President-elect at the FDI Virtual World Dental Congress 2021 – Special Edition, hosted by the Australian Dental Association September 26-29.

Dr Chadwick was elected in the first round, which former FDI President Kathryn Kell, DDS said was unusual and added that this speaks to her experience and qualifications.

“I have known Dr Greg Chadwick as President of ADA and it is wonderful that he is now President-elect of FDI for two years and then automatically President for two more years,” said Dr Kell. . “He will be great for the FDI and I have every confidence that he will continue to lead the world towards optimal oral health. I am so excited for his presidency.

Dr Chadwick was President of the FDI General Assembly for six years, and his election makes him another US President, with Dr Kell serving as President of the FDI from 2017 to 2019.

Dr Chadwick, originally from North Carolina, is Dean of the School of Dentistry at the University of East Carolina and served as ADA President from 2001 to 2002 and a Trustee from 1996 to 2000.

In an interview with ADA News, Dr Chadwick said he looks forward to the next two years, when he can undergo on-the-job training for the leadership role, and sees opportunities – not challenges. – in the future.

Leading the organization despite COVID-19 and its aftermath will be high on its list.

“In the short term, I want patients to come back to dental offices and the practices to resume operations,” he said.

Another opportunity he wants to seize is the shortage of Allied personnel.

“It’s an international problem, not just an Illinois problem or a North Carolina problem,” Dr Chadwick said.

Dr Gehani knows Dr Chadwick well and has said that his friend was a “wonderful leader and a good human being.” He has served the ADA very well and the FDI is in good hands.

As for Dr Gehani, he said that now that his term as ADA President is over, he will turn his attention to oral hygiene around the world as an advisor to the FDI.

“I believe in equal treatment for everyone, every member of the world,” he said.

“I want to make a difference in the world,” added Dr Gehani. “I was born in a city where there was no running water, and there are still parts of the world where there are [situations]. I want to reach out to them.

The FDI Council, according to the FDI website, “directs the FDI in line with its vision and mission.” It comprises the President of the FDI, the President-elect, the Treasurer and 10 advisers, all elected by the General Assembly. The President of the General Assembly and the Executive Director of FDI are non-voting members of the Council.

Dr Marron-Tarrazzi, as a member of the FDI Member Liaison and Support Committee, said she hoped to serve as a bridge between the FDI and other national dental organizations, and said she was happy to the election of Dr Chadwick.

“Dr. Chadwick has over 20 years of experience with the FDI, as an advisor, president of the chamber and treasurer,” said Dr. Marron-Tarrazzi. “He knows the anatomy and physiology of the functioning of the FDI His experience in private practice, organized dentistry and as a dean will give FDI a leader with solid experience and a fresh perspective.

The FDI has five standing committees, each with a specific area of ​​activity and expertise. Dr. Marron-Tarrazzi’s committee, which reports to the FDI Council, oversees and advises the council on communications and support to FDI members, according to the FDI website. The committee monitors the needs, expectations and performance of members in advocating for FDI oral health policies and manages the travel grant project. It consists of six FDI members, plus a liaison advisor.

Dr Marron-Tarrazzi laughed when she spoke of her first meeting as head of the FDI, scheduled for 2 a.m. on the night of her election since FDI’s headquarters are in Switzerland.

Like the ADA House of Delegates, the FDI General Assembly is the supreme legislative and governing body of the FDI that meets once a year to approve the budget, hold elections, set policies for the FDI. FDI and the strategic plan, missions and objectives, and monitor progress on their achievement.

The FDI World Dental Federation comprises approximately 200 national dental associations, including the ADA, from more than 130 countries. He represents the voice of over a million dentists around the world.
